Käthe Kollwitz was the inspiration behind mother nature. This piece demonstrates the struggles of the wildlife and human ignorance towards the issue. Growing up, I have seen my grandma take care of plants and adopt birds, so it inspired me to speak up for them. Gabriele Münter also had a huge impact behind the composition of mother nature as she traveled a lot and kept a journal of her findings, which were later incorporated in her work.
CRITICAL INVESTIGATION
I really wanted my block print to have the same style that Käthe Kollwitz had in her work. She used expressionism and I felt that such a movement in art, was quite efficient for me to get the message of my piece across. Expressionism dealt with revealing emotions through the use of art and that's exactly what I wanted in Mother Nature. There had to be a way people could connect to nature dying each and every single day, in inhuman ways. The details were inspired by Gabriele Münter , as majority of her works had the outdoor world embedded in them. Her technique of blending was appealing, as it made her work neat and organized. Even in my planning sketches, I did a lot of blending, because it added a smooth and professional touch to it. It made the lines in my actual block print straight and well defined. Even though both of the artists used expressionism, Käthe Kollwitz's representation of it, was much more intense than Gabriele Münter's. The reason being is, the events that Kollwitz depicted were dreadful, because there would be death, helplessness, and tragedies in her pieces. That is probably one of the reasons, why she used German Expressionism. There was value, because she used black and white, and these colors usually symbolize a melancholy atmosphere. Though Münter's art depicted loneliness and deep thinking, it still presented the beauty of nature. Her use of colors and texture, became a reason to conserve something in my piece. Her work unfolded the stunning appearance of wildlife and that became another point for me to speak up for nature. I got two themes, as one was to prevent the demoralization of plants and animals, while the other was to sustain the aesthetic happiness that nature provides for us all.

PLANNING SKETCHES
The very first sketch I made was inspired by Käthe Kollwitz and Gabriele Münter. The theme of this was the struggles faced by nature. The eyes in the piece came from the Survivors, which was piece made by Käthe Kollwitz. In that piece the eyes depicted the amount to devastation everyone was embedded in. I wanted to have the same effect, but wanted the eyes to be wide open. It had to be demonstrated that people usually see negative actions in the world, but don't do anything about it. That's why the mouth was zipped by the staircase and covered by the tree and the flower. These two things were considered due to the works of Gabriele Münter, because almost all her paintings had nature like elements in them. The purpose of the sketch was to highlight the torture, that the wildlife was going through. The tree and flower showed the beauty of the outdoor world, but the reality of the situation was, that everyone was begging for help. Animals can't speak and they expect humans to be the source of their assistance, but humans aren't willing to speak up by any means. The reason, I didn't consider this sketch was, because it was very crowded. I wished to have everything spaced out and neat.
