INSPIRATION:
(PLANNING) The very first painting that I used as my inspiration was called La Femme. I was amazed by the utilization of the value in the piece, as it provided the painting with a bold and classy vibe. It also provided a feeling of being incomplete as not all of the components in the work were included such as the head, the hair, and the other eye. I wanted to incorporate a similar concept in my painting, hence I decided to utilize my face as the base and eliminate some of the features. I wanted the black and white in my work as well to give it that bold look. In La Femme some areas were darkened compared to the others to provide the piece with emphasis, hence I also painted the lips, part of the neck, the eye lid, and hair as dark as possible. The expression of the lady in La Femme was serious and not satisfying, hence I incorporated a monotonous expression on myself as well to enhance the theme of not truly living through the experiences that life has to offer, due to not having internal peace. |
The second piece that I utilized was by an artist named Paul Matchett and it was pop art. The incorporation of black to outline the features of the female presented in the painting was highly efficient. This inspiration of mine connected to La Femme as both of the paintings were using value in a very similar and organized manner. I was appreciative of the composition of the eyes in this painting, as the bolder the eyes the more one can obtain a depressing vibe. Regarding that aspect, I decided to make the eyes in my piece smokey. I utilized black and a tint of white to provide the eye lids with depth and I also made the eye balls the same tone. I also liked the way the nose was outlined and how the rest of the skin was a lighter hue. Hence I also made the nose extremely dark and made the rest of the complexion quite light.

I wanted to associate some form of nature in my painting, hence I decided to look at some interior designs and patterns that were apparent in my houses and buildings in general. I was impressed by the composition of the design in this piece. There were leaves with several inorganic shapes. The whole piece came out to resemble an actual flower. Hence I decided to make a flower on my of canvases by making the petals spread out to ensure the theme was still apparent in the painting. I didn't want to provide my work with cool colors due to the dark and deep theme of not being actually alive. I was in awe of the pattern of movement and the curves associated in the work. Regarding that aspect I decided to make multiple swirls around the canvas to display the amount of hardships one experiences in their lives and how they deteriorate one's willingness to live a happy and an alert life.

PLANNING:
(SKETCHES) The very first sketch that I made a depiction of the lady from La Femme. The reason I made an exact copy of the painting was to understand the intricacy of the features and how to incorporate the value in the piece efficiently. It's quite difficult drawing only some features of the face, as the whole composition of the person being drawn still needs to make sense. I didn't want to provide my work with an unrealistic aspect when it came to the face. The theme is really touching and the facial expression is one of the most important components towards delivering the theme efficiently. The second sketch that I made was of a random male. I was trying to be more open minded towards the gender that can efficiently portray the theme. I was really proud of the composition of the eyes and the nose, but the lips were slightly disoriented. If I associated a male in my work, it would've not spoke to me. When I thought about placing myself in the painting, I was more passionate towards the composition and thought several ways in which the theme could potentially be delivered. It was hard to imagine myself as someone else and it was drifting the piece away from the central idea I was trying to base everything off of. The last sketch that I made was of a an eye. The reason being is the eye is one of the most crucial components towards displaying emotions and a story behinds one's life. I wanted to provide a lot of emphasis to the eyes presented in my painting, hence I made sure all of the shadows were presented in the painting in a clean manner. I also wanted the eyes to face the audience directly, because that emphasizes an intense look, which captivates the audience's attention. |
